A study by the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP) revealed that the Ucayali River changed its course in the district of Jenaro Herrera (Loreto) due to the erosion of the banks by the force of the currents, as well as the climatic and geological conditions of the area. This change caused the collapse of land on the riverbanks, altered the connectivity of the Supay and Sahua lagoons, and left large areas of riparian forests at risk, which form part of the natural environment of the communities. The diversion of the river reached rice, yuca, vegetable, and other crop fields, as well as stands of camu camu that support the family economy.
