The article provides an overview of Hungary's sheep industry from 2000 to 2020, highlighting a decrease in the country's sheep population and an increase in sheep exports, with a peak in 2020 at around 7,050 tonnes, valued at over EUR 46 million. Despite the high demand for Hungarian live sheep for meat production in the EU, domestic consumption of sheep meat remains low at 0.35-0.38 kg per capita annually, significantly below the EU average. To enhance the sector's stability and growth, efforts are being made to boost domestic consumption through a promotional campaign backed by the European Union, with a budget of 260,000 euros per year until 2023.
