Moldova has seen a significant expansion in its apple export markets, reaching 30 countries in 2022, up from 18 in 2021, as it diversifies away from its heavy reliance on the Russian market. The country successfully reduced its reliance on Russia, with the share of apple exports to the country falling below 90% for the first time, while exports to the EU and Middle East saw growth. However, the increased market presence comes with added costs, including increased marketing efforts, time, and hiring of specialized staff, which have so far offset the potential earnings growth. Moldovan agricultural managers suggest that focusing on a smaller number of key markets could help mitigate these increased costs.
