In response to crop losses and frozen stocks due to extreme weather conditions, several CIS member states, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, have imposed export bans on certain vegetables, including onions, to stabilize domestic prices and availability. These bans, in effect from early to mid-2023, aim to mitigate the impact on domestic markets while ensuring sufficient supplies for their own populations. The article highlights the efforts of these countries to address the short-term challenges posed by the loss of stock and the need to import onions to meet demand, noting that the bans do not necessarily lead to a shortage in the Russian market due to diversified supply sources and import patterns. The situation underscores the importance of adaptive supply chain strategies and international cooperation to mitigate the effects of adverse weather and ensure food security.
