The Mexican swine industry experienced a 3.1% increase in pork production in the first eight months of 2021, reaching 1.09 million tons, according to the Agricultural Markets Advisory Group (GCMA). This increase was due to heavier slaughter weights. The production's value rose by 53% to $2,073 million, driven by a 35.7% increase in the price of live pigs. Despite this growth, apparent consumption surpassed supply by 10.2%, leading to a 19.8% increase in pork imports, totaling 835,000 tonnes valued at $1,618 million. The GCMA predicts a 3.5% growth in domestic pork production by the end of the year.
