Maersk is currently in the testing phase of using 10% ethanol in the total fuel of its ships. This blend has already proven to be viable from an operational standpoint, and after the experimental period, the company is expected to engage in commercial discussions with Brazilian producers. "The discussions will focus on sustainability; whoever supplies us needs to prove their sustainability," says Danilo Veras, Vice President of Regulatory Policies for Maersk in Latin America. The Senior Vice President responsible for the company's Energy Transition area, Morten Bo Christiansen, states that the use of ethanol could reach up to 100% and considers that the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) recent one-year delay in implementing the Net-zero proposal for the sector slows down discussions in the industry, but does not change the company's plans. If all shipping uses this same 10% ethanol blend in its fuels, 30 million tons of ethanol, or 50 billion liters, would be needed. ...
