The Indian government is set to implement compulsory auctions to oversee the import of Nepalese tea in an effort to ensure quality and traceability. The move has raised concerns among Nepalese tea entrepreneurs, who fear it could negatively affect their foreign exchange earnings. In response, the Nepalese Prime Minister has pledged to support the tea industry and find solutions to the issues surrounding tea exports to India. The Kosi Tea Coordination Committee, however, recommends that the Nepalese government should establish a tea auction center, subsidize tea exports, and ensure a consistent electricity supply to tea gardens to mitigate the potential negative impacts of the new Indian policy.
