India has become the world's second largest fish producer, contributing approximately 8% to global fish production. The country has made significant advances in technology and strategic policy reforms in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors between 2004 and 2024. The 2025-2026 Union Budget allocates approximately $324 million for aquaculture and seafood exports, with plans to reduce tariffs to financially support fishermen and develop marine fisheries. The budget also aims to establish a framework for sustainable use of fishery resources in the exclusive economic zone and high seas, and increases the loan limit of the Kisan Credit Card from Rs. 300,000 to Rs. 500,000 to improve access to credit for fishery stakeholders.
