India may import dairy products such as butter and ghee due to a supply constraint caused by stagnant milk production in the last fiscal year. Despite domestic demand growing by 8-10% and milk output increasing to 221 million tonnes in 2021-22, the government will assess the milk stock in Southern states before making a decision. The country may not import dairy products if international prices are high. The stagnation in milk production is attributed to lumpy skin disease in cattle and a rebound in milk demand post-pandemic.
