India's carabeef industry, centered around the Asian domestic water buffalo, is on the rise, driven by the expansion of the dairy sector and increasing domestic and international demand, according to a report by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN). With a projected 3% increase in production for MY 2024, reaching 4.61 million metric tons (MMT), the growth is supported by higher slaughter numbers and improved cattle body weights, thanks to government investments in animal health and nutrition. Despite restrictions on the slaughter of dairy cattle leading to a focus on water buffaloes, a government initiative to encourage the rearing of male buffaloes for meat has seen limited success. India remains the largest producer of carabeef, with significant processing infrastructure, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.
