India's mustard seed production is anticipated to hit a record 12 million tonnes in the 2023-24 season, thanks to an all-time high sown area of 10 million hectares. This remarkable growth, from 8.6 million tonnes in 2020-21 to an estimated 8.80 million tonnes in 2022-23, is largely due to the efforts of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) through its mustard model farm project, favorable weather conditions, and attractive prices. The project's expansion from 400 farms in Rajasthan to over 3,500 across multiple states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka, has been pivotal. This surge in mustard seed production is poised to boost India's domestic edible oil supplies significantly, aiding the country's ambition to lessen its reliance on imported edible oils.
