(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Go Seong-sik = Jeju Province announced on the 30th that it will invest 91.7 billion won over the next five years to promote the buckwheat industry.
Jeju Province has recently confirmed the 'Third Basic Plan for the Development of Jeju Buckwheat Industry (2025-2029)' and will pursue a comprehensive development strategy that includes the development, production, processing, and distribution of new varieties to respond to climate change, as well as tourism utilizing buckwheat.
The specific projects include expanding the development and distribution of new varieties, expanding contracted cultivation and fostering organizations, digital agricultural mechanization, developing high-value-added processed products, activating integrated brands and diversifying online sales, and building experience tourism linked to the buckwheat flower festival.
Additionally, the Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute has decided to develop and distribute to farmers a new variety, 'Haetalmisa', to respond to climate change.
As of 2023, Jeju Province's buckwheat cultivation area is 2,169 hectares, accounting for 62.2% of the national total of 3,486 hectares, making it the main buckwheat production area. The province's annual buckwheat production is 1,703 tons, accounting for 57.2% of the national total of 2,975 tons.
Buckwheat is one of the five grains mentioned in the legend of 'Jacheongbi', the goddess of Jeju agriculture, and it grows well even in the poor volcanic ash soil. It is used as an ingredient in traditional foods such as bingtteok and embodies Jeju's cultural identity.
Since the development and registration of the 'Jeju Buckwheat' integrated brand in 2017, there have been achievements such as winning the Prime Minister's Commendation from the Rural Development Administration, winning the Grand Prize in the Rural Fusion Industry Excellence Competition, and appointing the representative of the Jeju Buckwheat Farming Corporation as an honorary field research advisor for the Rural Development Administration.
