Tridge summary

The Iranian Pistachio Association (IPA) recently released statistics showing that the 2024/25 pistachio production season in Iran has concluded, with the total export volume of pistachios reaching 202,000 tons (in shell weight), a 50% increase compared to the previous season. The final exports accounted for 82% of the initial inventory, indicating a remarkable season for the Iranian pistachio industry. The price competitiveness of Iranian pistachios, limited supply from other regions, and the rapid increase in global consumption of Iranian pistachio kernels contributed to this impressive performance.

During the 12th month of the season (August 23 to September 22), Iran exported approximately 10,000 tons of pistachios (in shell weight). During this period, the market continued the trend of previous months: transactions of in-shell pistachios remained sluggish, prices saw slight adjustments, but there was no significant change in supply and demand; demand for pistachio kernels remained strong, continuing to drive exports to all destinations, accounting for nearly half of the total monthly exports.

For exports to China, Iranian pistachio exports to China reached 27,947 tons in the 2024/25 season, a 55% increase from 18,060 tons in the 2023/24 season.

IPA's previous estimate for the 2024 crop yield was 200,000 tons of dried in-shell pistachios, but considering the latest end-of-season inventory forecast of 15,000 tons, IPA adjusted its previous estimate, finally determining the 2024 crop yield to be 217,000 tons.

The recently announced opening price for the U.S. market was higher than expected, which theoretically should enhance the price competitiveness of Iranian pistachios. However, in reality, the trade of Iranian in-shell pistachios remains stagnant; the sharp fluctuations of the U.S. dollar against the Iranian rial and the escalating export restrictions have continuously increased the uncertainty for growers and exporters, ultimately leading to a market deadlock.

The association's official pre-harvest forecast for the 2025/26 season shows that Iran's production of dried in-shell pistachios is expected to be 240,000 tons. Currently, about two-thirds of the pistachio harvest has been completed. Compared to the previous production season, the proportion of closed-shell pistachios has decreased, while the proportion of shrunken kernels and floating fruits has slightly increased. An excessively high rate of shrunken kernels may lead to a downward adjustment of the post-harvest production estimate. Due to power shortages causing irrigation interruptions, the size of the kernels in this production season is generally smaller than last year.
