The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts a 10% increase in wheat production in Iran, reaching 14.5 million metric tons in 2023, and making it the 12th largest wheat supplier globally. Despite this, wheat imports are projected to drop by 0.5 million mt to 4 million mt. Barley production is also anticipated to rise by 7% to 3.2 million mt. These developments are part of Iran's strategy to prioritize domestic agricultural output for food security reasons since 2018, when the US imposed sanctions and limited international trade access.
