Dr. Antony Prabhu Philip, a senior scientist at NOFIMA, emphasized the importance of marine-based osmolytes in salmon feed at the IFFO’s annual conference in Lisbon. He argued that these compounds, essential for salmon health, particularly in maintaining hydration and cell integrity in cold, saline environments, have been overlooked with the rise of plant-based feed alternatives. The reduced use of marine-derived osmolytes has led to increased instances of dehydration and disease in salmon. To address these challenges, Dr. Prabhu is leading a project, OsmoProtect, funded by the Norwegian Research Council from 2024 to 2028, which aims to gather data on the benefits of targeted supplementation of marine osmolytes in feed for improving salmon welfare and reducing health issues.
