The 2023/24 Italian orange harvest has seen a significant 20% increase in production, reaching 1.6 million tonnes, which has improved the availability for fresh consumption and juice production. Despite the high quality of the oranges, demand has not kept up with the increased supply, largely due to inflation, leading to a 19% drop in sales in large-scale retail trade from October to February and a 12% decline in overall spending, even as the average selling price rose by nearly 9%. While the area under cultivation has slightly expanded and exports have surged by 29% owing to a production crisis in Spain, imports have fallen by 19%. Nevertheless, Italy's trade balance for oranges remains negative for the 20th year in a row.
