Key Insight: Against the backdrop of increasingly depleted global eel resources and stricter international regulations, Japan has achieved a major breakthrough in artificial eel larvae hatching (closed-loop breeding) technology. The Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA) in collaboration with Yanmar Holdings and the non-profit research organization Marino Forum 21 recently announced obtaining three key patents, successfully reducing the large-scale hatching costs of juvenile eels to 1,800 yen (approximately 11.2 yuan) per eel, opening a new path toward sustainable development in the eel industry.
