In 2020, Japan witnessed a significant decline in sweet potato yield, marking the fourth consecutive year of decrease with a total production of 678,600 tons, the lowest since record-keeping began. This decrease was evident in key producing regions such as Kagoshima and Miyazaki, largely due to sweet potato basal rot. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture has allocated additional funds to combat the disease and bolster production. The decline in yield was also attributed to reduced planting areas and shifts in cultivation due to aging populations. A total of 2 billion yen has been allocated to support measures for maintaining sweet potato productivity amidst these challenges.
