Record snowfall in Akita and Yamagata Prefectures, Japan, has caused significant damage to agriculture, with Yuzawa City seeing over 1.47 meters of snow, four times the normal amount. The snowfall has damaged vineyards, apple trees, and other crops, with some areas seeing up to 1.80 meters of snow. The incident has brought back memories of a similar snowfall in 2010-2011, which resulted in a yield decrease to less than one-third. The damage is expected to increase as the government and JA have not confirmed many damaged areas. In Sho City, Yamagata Prefecture, the fungus beds and Tara bud houses have collapsed under the weight of the snow.
