Japan's potato production in the 2021/22 season is estimated to drop by 18 percent to 1.8 million MT due to unfavorable weather conditions in recent years, as reported by FAS / Tokyo. This follows a decrease of 3.4 percent in acreage and 8.1 percent in production volume compared to the previous season. The unusual weather has affected the potato crops in Hokkaido, with insufficient sunshine and low temperatures in one year, and high temperatures and drought in the next. The consumption of potatoes in Japan is categorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) into processing, table potato, starch potato, feed, and seed potato. The processing sector has seen an increase in its share of the market, with approximately 25 percent of domestic potatoes being used for processing, primarily for potato chips and frozen potato products like French fries.
