As damage from high water temperatures due to climate change continues, Jeju aquaculture is seeking new solutions. Jeju Marine Fisheries Research Institute announced on the 8th that it is embarking on a pilot study for mixed-species aquaculture using long-tailed red snapper and black porgy, species native to Jeju waters, in an effort to reduce damage from high water temperatures due to climate change. This response measure comes as the need for developing alternative aquaculture species that are resistant to high water temperatures has increased, following continuous damage to gwangi (a type of fish) farms during the recent summer heatwaves. Currently, gwangi is the dominant aquaculture species in Jeju, with an increasing trend of replacing it with pollock in the eastern region where underground seawater has been developed.
