The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Ko Sang-hwan) announced that it is accelerating the "Garlic and Onion Mechanization Excellence Model Development Project" to spread the mechanization of the entire garlic and onion cultivation process. According to the Institute, as of 2024, the cultivation area for garlic has decreased by 16% from the previous year to 909 hectares, and onions have decreased by 10% to 675 hectares. Since last year, the Institute has been providing long-term agricultural machinery leasing and technical support for the entire garlic and onion cultivation process until 2026. The Institute analyzed that the long-term leasing of agricultural machinery for garlic farms last year resulted in a labor cost reduction of 84.4% from 268,000 won to 43,000 won per 10 ares compared to manual sowing.
