Sales of the Spanish spring onion, calçot, have seen a significant increase at Mercabarna, with January's distribution reaching 4 million units, a 38.5% increase from the previous year and slightly above pre-pandemic levels. The majority of the calçots are sourced from Valls in Tarragona and the region around Barcelona, with a projected yield of 18 million units for the year. The demand for calçots has grown due to their use in various dishes and as a traditional folk festival food in Catalonia. Promotional campaigns and social media efforts have also contributed to the increase in sales.
