Korean seaweed exports have surged by nearly 30% in the first two months of this year, reaching $141.36 million, with significant market growth in the United States, China, and Thailand. This increase is attributed to the global recognition of seaweed as a healthy food, especially seasoned seaweed. To meet the rising demand, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in Korea is focusing on expanding seaweed production through new fish farms and designated seaweed industry promotion zones, alongside the construction of a seafood export complex. Additionally, a 'dry seaweed grading system' is set to be introduced by 2026 for international certification of seaweed quality, aiming to secure better global market pricing and establish South Korea as a leader in seaweed production and quality certification, ahead of Japan and China.
