In 2020, South Korea experienced a slight increase in offshore fishery production, with a total of 932,000 tons, which is a 1.9% increase from the previous year. This growth is attributed to several factors, including the shift in the main fishing season due to expanded low-level cold water power in the West Sea, and the effect of the warm marine environment in the East China Sea in the spring. The production volume increased significantly in offshore longline fishing and trawl fishing, particularly for anchovies. However, the production of mackerel decreased due to poor fishing conditions in November and December. The total production value for offshore fisheries in 2020 was 4,365.5 billion won, marking a 10.3% increase from the previous year.
