Extreme drought and high costs are affecting lake farms, leading to low fish pond levels and some water dry-ups. This has resulted in a decrease in fish production, but a shortage during the Christmas season is not expected, despite higher prices for fish, especially live carp. The prices for live carp are expected to increase by 40%, ranging from HUF 1,800 to HUF 2,200 per kilo. Hungarian lake farms are not exporting fish abroad, which will ensure a sufficient supply of carp and catfish, although there may be less perch and pike available. The high prices are expected to decrease demand, but a temporary shortage may develop after the festive season if all fish ponds become empty by the end of the year.
