Belgium: Local actions by farmers against nitrogen policy

The concerns of Flemish farmers are similar to those of the Netherlands, the nitrogen policy is the recent reason for taking to the streets. Last week, the Flemish Parliament approved the 'nitrogen decree', or the package of measures to limit nitrogen emissions in Flanders. This makes farmers angry and disappointed. Just like in the Netherlands - and Germany, France and other countries where farmers have recently taken to the streets - dissatisfaction with increasing environmental requirements plays a role. “Sustainability has a price,” says Flemish young farmer leader Bram van Hecke on Flemish TV prior to the local protest actions. “If we do not dare to say to consumers: sustainability costs money and if you want farmers to have a fair income, it will have to be paid for.
