Apple growers in Flanders, Belgium, are facing challenges due to an oversupply and low selling prices on the global market. The war in Ukraine has further worsened their position with increasing costs. The Farmers' Union had urged consumers and supermarkets to buy local apples to support them, but the oversupply has kept consumer prices low. Growers are struggling to earn a living with the current prices, as they need at least 45-50 cents per apple. Some apples intended for industry are stuck with only 10 cents per kilo, which is not enough to cover the harvest and other costs. Some growers are even leaving their fruit on the trees due to these challenges.
