Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesian seaweed exports have seen a cumulative increase during January-October 2021, driven by high demand from China. The export value rose by 20.42% yoy to $177.99 million, and the export volume grew by 11.68% yoy to 159.59 thousand tons. Indonesia ranks as the world's second-largest seaweed exporter, with Eucheuma Cottonii and Gracilaria sp. being the primary export types to China, used in carrageenan and agar-agar production, respectively. South Sulawesi and East Java are the main seaweed production areas. To further optimize seaweed production, LPEI has launched the Foreign Exchange Village program, aiming to foster economic, social, and environmental development in regions with export-oriented products.
