Portugal: Madeira sweet potato is protected with geographical indication

The European Commission (EC) announced the inclusion of Madeira sweet potatoes in the European register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), having received the status of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The decision, which has already been published in the Official Journal of the European Union, thus adds Madeira sweet potatoes to the list of more than 200 Portuguese products that the European Union (EU) protects as geographical indications and designations of origin. According to the communication from the European entity, the title of Protected Geographical Indication highlights the relationship between the delimited geographic region and the name of the product.
