The German Maize Committee (DMK) has reported a successful 2021 corn harvest with a slight decrease in cultivation area and a significant increase in harvest volumes. The total area under cultivation decreased by 2.5% to 2.65 million ha, primarily due to a decrease in silage maize. However, grain maize cultivation increased by 2.7% to 431,000 ha. The silo maize harvest exceeded 100 million tons for the first time ever, with a record average yield of 472.2 dt/ha. The grain maize harvest was the largest since 2017, with an average yield of 103.6 dt/ha. The quality of maize silage was largely good to very good, but there were regional variations in energy, crude protein, starch, and fiber content. The DMK emphasized the importance of testing one's own maize silage to create performance-related rations.
