In 2024, Malaysia's palm oil industry exemplifies a balance between profitability and sustainability, contributing RM114 billion in export value and 2.3% of GDP. The sector emphasizes traceability, environmental protection, and empowering smallholders, who manage 26.4% of the oil palm area. Central to this is the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, with over 3.86 million hectares certified by March 2025. Malaysia has reduced its planted area by 4.2% over four years, focusing on yield optimization to prevent deforestation, contrasting with Brazil's expansion. The MSPO 2.0 standard aligns with EU sustainability requirements, and Malaysia is diversifying its export markets. Continued investment in the MSPO ecosystem and stakeholder collaboration is advised to sustain Malaysia's leadership in responsible palm oil production.
