Maritime transport: a vital link in the global economy

According to an article in Fast Company Brazil, maritime transport plays an essential role in the international economy, moving cargo such as soybeans every day and receiving millions of passengers on tourist cruises. However, this logistical importance has a significant environmental cost: the sector is responsible for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure comparable to the total emissions of Germany. Even products with a sustainability seal, when exported, end up generating considerable emissions during transportation, unless they are produced and consumed locally or shipped by electric trucks. This highlights the environmental dilemma faced by companies and consumers concerned about the carbon footprint of their products.
