Japan has experienced a significant surge in egg prices, with the average wholesale price increasing by 76% to 335 yen (2.5 dollars) per kilogram, the highest rise since 1991. The average retail price for a dozen eggs also rose by 20% to 212 yen ($1.6). This is due to an unprecedented chicken slaughter in the country as a result of a bird flu outbreak. Nearly 1.6 million chickens have been slaughtered in mainland Japan from autumn to March 6, marking the highest number in the history of industrial poultry farming in the country.
