Farmers in Kazakhstan's Abay region have been forced to feed their damaged watermelon harvest to cattle due to unprecedented hailstorms. The damaged watermelons have rotted in the fields and are no longer suitable for human consumption. The farmers are now seeking an extension of the loans they took out for sowing melons and are in negotiations with the bank to defer the loan for a year. The law does not provide compensation for damage if the areas are not insured.
