REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Minister of Agriculture and Head of the National Food Agency (Bappenas), Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that Papua is entering a new phase of food development. With the acceleration of the rice field expansion program, logistical support, and cross-sector collaboration, Papua is projected to start achieving food self-sufficiency by 2027 and fully align with other islands in Indonesia in the coming years. "Our dream is for Papua to be food self-sufficient. No longer dependent on supplies from Makassar or Java. Papua must meet its own needs. Because if we transport from other regions, the transportation costs are borne by the people," said Minister Amran during the distribution of SPHP rice in Jayapura, Papua, on Tuesday (12/9/2025). The Minister explained that Papua's food needs reach about 660 thousand tons per year, while local production capacity is only about 120 thousand–124 thousand tons.
