Mexico's Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Manuel Villalobos, announced that Jalisco, Mexico's avocado-producing state, will begin exporting avocados to the United States, strengthening Mexico's position as the world's leading avocado supplier. The state already exports to over 30 countries. Authorities are working to ensure compliance with the Operational Work Plan for exporting to the US and implementing an electronic traceability system. The growth of Mexico's avocado industry is remarkable, with national production tripling in 25 years and 87% of the national territory planted with avocados now recognized as a pest-free zone.
