Mexico’s foreign sales of staple grains collapsed in 2025 as weaker domestic production, drought, and shrinking planted areas sharply reduced shipments abroad, reinforcing concerns about the country’s growing food supply imbalance. According to data from Grupo Consultor de Mercados Agrícolas (GCMA), shipments of basic grains fell 76% year over year to 126,895t. The category includes corn, wheat, rice, and beans. The decline was driven largely by wheat, whose exports were virtually eliminated due to lower national output. In value terms, exports of these products decreased by just over 50% from the previous year, totaling about US$168.5 million (MX$2.9 billion). Although Mexico is not a major grain exporter compared with its strength in horticultural products, the contraction points to a deeper structural issue, said Juan Carlos Anaya, Director, GCMA.
