Over 30,000 hectares of horticultural land in Spain have been damaged due to heavy rainfall, with an estimated 10-15% of production lost, primarily affecting peppers, cucumbers, and aubergines. The disaster has led to the collapse of around 100 hectares of plastic greenhouses in Almeria, accounting for 1% of the production area. Although the plastic damage can be repaired, it will cause logistical issues for the winter supply of fruit vegetables to North-Western Europe, especially for Dutch consumers. The loss is expected to significantly reduce the availability of these vegetables, with Dutch greenhouse growers unlikely to be able to compensate for the shortfall.
