The official journal of the EU has published the registration of the Uvs Chatsargana PGI, making it the first product from Mongolia to be included as a Protected Geographical Indication under European regulation. This regulation protects berries of the Uvs sea buckthorn, originally from Mongolia. With this addition, there are now 19 non-EU countries with PDO, PGI or TSG products protected at the Community level, and 225 non-EU products in the European register of Geographical Indications, 195 of which are in the Food sector. Mauro Rosati, Director General of the Qualivita Foundation, views this expansion of the European regulation of Geographical Indications as a positive development and believes that it confirms the legislation's validity, suggesting that any changes to the regulations could be harmful.
