Bluetongue disease, caused by midges, has spread across northern Europe, affecting over a hundred companies in the UK, 6,026 in the Netherlands, and 1,192 places in Belgium. The disease has been confirmed in several regions of Germany, with over 3,200 infections since October 2023. The European Veterinary Authority has highlighted the need for increased surveillance and cautious livestock purchasing due to the disease's ongoing spread and the anticipated cooler temperatures that could further increase midge activity.
