More yellow onions are grown, but the area of potatoes is smaller in the Netherlands

The arable area will have increased by 14.4 thousand hectares to 549 thousand hectares in 2023. Seed onions and legumes were grown more than in 2022. Potatoes were grown less in 2023. Despite the increase in 2023, the total area of arable crops has decreased by more than 13 percent compared to 2000. This is evident from the provisional results of the 2023 Agricultural Census by Statistics Netherlands. More yellow seed onions grownThe total area of seed onions was 29.2 thousand hectares. That is almost 2 thousand hectares more (6.7 percent) than in 2022. In that year, the area of sowing onions decreased by 9 percent. Yellow seed onions were grown on 87 percent of the area (82 percent in 2022), and red seed onions were grown on the remaining 13 percent.
