Despite experiencing its worst drought in three decades during the summer of 2022, Morocco managed to increase its onion exports, exporting over 65,000 tons in the first nine months of the current year, a significant increase from the previous year and a sixfold increase over the past five years. Onions are Morocco's most exported vegetable, following tomatoes and peppers, and the majority of these exports are to West African countries such as Senegal, Mauritania, and Mali. However, in February 2023, the Moroccan government banned the export of onions, potatoes, and tomatoes to African countries to prevent domestic market price increases, a decision that has received mixed reactions from growers and exporters.
