Despite having a developed local avocado production sector, Morocco is importing a record volume of avocados this year, with 13.5 thousand tons already imported in just nine months. The popularity of avocados is increasing globally, and Morocco is incorporating it into local cuisine, leading to increased imports. The main supplier of avocados for Morocco is Peru, accounting for 78% of imports, while Spain has lost some market share. However, Morocco also exports avocados, with sales to foreign markets quadrupling since 2017. The country faces challenges due to water scarcity, but the use of modern technologies can help reduce water consumption and maintain stable revenue from avocado exports.
