Global fertilizer markets are experiencing an unprecedented wave of turmoil amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East region, causing clear disruptions in supply chains and a significant rise in the prices of essential agricultural inputs, amid growing concerns about the impact on global food security, especially in developing countries. This disruption is largely linked to the sensitive nature of the fertilizer industry, which relies on major production centers based in the Gulf region, alongside the decline in maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important international maritime routes and through which an important percentage of global nitrogen fertilizer exports, close to 30%, passes.
