The Sea-Fisheries protection Authority (SFPA) of Ireland has issued a new Fisheries Information Notice to help fishermen distinguish between Atlantic bluefin tuna and bigeye tuna. The notice emphasizes that while both species are similar in appearance, accidental capture of Atlantic bluefin tuna is allowed for Irish fishing vessels, subject to certain conditions, whereas bigeye tuna must not be targeted, retained, or landed by vessels 20 meters and above. Smaller vessels may accidentally capture bigeye tuna, in which case they must adhere to the landing obligation. The notice is designed to comply with EU regulations and can be found on the SFPA website.
