The recommendation is clear: avoid completely the cod fished in the United Kingdom. It comes from the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which with the latest update of the Good Fish Guide signals a worsening of the conditions of some of the most consumed species, from cod fillets to langoustines to mackerel. According to the environmental organization, British cod stocks have reached a critical level after years of decline. The main cause remains overfishing, but climate change – with rising sea temperatures – and other pressures on ecosystems that compromise the reproduction and survival of young specimens also weigh in. The result is an unprecedented downgrade: in the updated guide there are no longer any options considered sustainable for cod fished in the United Kingdom.
