The Australian government has announced that caged-egg farming will be phased out by 2036, following a joint meeting of the nation's agriculture ministers. The new animal welfare standards, which ban battery cages, will be implemented by each state government. WA Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis believes WA can phase-out caged eggs by 2032, and Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt stated that cages may still be used in egg production if they provide more space and environmental enrichment.
