Canada's mustard production has dropped 28% to 71,000 tonnes for the 2021-22 marketing year, leading to a significant supply and price crunch. Despite an increase in seeded acres, a drought resulted in smaller seeds and lower yields, only 5,000 tonnes of which are projected to be carryout stock. High-delivered bids for both yellow and brown mustard have increased by 60 and 70 cents respectively from last year, causing buyers to seek alternatives to meet demand. The current prices are the highest ever seen, with the market still chasing after supply and prices expected to decrease once the market realizes there is nothing left to chase.
