Russia: Named folk fish

Russians recognized mackerel as a national fish, and called fish soup their most favorite fish dish. At the same time, seafood consumption per capita in Russia is gradually growing, but consumption patterns vary depending on generation. Analysts from Rosselkhozbank obtained this data after summing up the results of a survey of Russians. Mackerel, “red” and herring are the most popular domestic fish species among Russians – 20%, 18% and 17% of respondents, respectively, named these varieties as their favorites. Pollock is a close second in popularity - 15% of respondents prefer to buy it. This is followed by haddock (9%), cod (8%), sprat and roach (5% each), as well as pike (3%). Mackerel is truly the “people's fish” - one of the most consumed marine fish in the world. On Russian shelves you can most often find Atlantic mackerel caught in the North-East Atlantic by Murmansk and Kaliningrad fishermen.
